About Us

Alpine Fire Department is a public safety organization of dedicated professionals whose mission is to:

  • Save Lives
  • Protect Property and the Environment
  • Serve the Community

History of Alpine Fire Protection District
The town of Alpine was established in the late 1800's and from that time until 1948, the majority of structure fires resulted in total loss of the home or structure. The Alpine Fire Protection District was founded in 1948, and officially originated on December 19, 1957. It is located in an unincorporated area of eastern San Diego County, California and covers 27.5 square miles. Statistics from Census 2000, San Diego Association of Governments, records the population of Alpine as 14,041, with 30% - fourteen years age or under, and 12% - 65 and older.

Alpine Fire Protection District Today
The active day time school population in Alpine is 2,500 children, as the District is host to Alpine Elementary, Boulder Oaks Elementary, Shadow Hills Elementary, Creekside Early Learning Center, Joan MacQueen Middle School, Alpine Community Center Preschool, Alpine Country Day School and various before and after school enterprises. Other high care enterprises in Alpine include, one Special Care Treatment Center for the institutionalized and four Alzheimer's - elderly care facilities.

Ground Breaking

The District finds itself as the connective joint between the "Mountain Empire", made up of small outlying rural communities; Viejas Indian Reservation, which nestles on the eastern border; Sycuan Indian Reservation, located outside of the southwest border; and larger cities to the north and west, all within a 25 mile radius.

The District operates one fully staffed station on a 7/24 basis. An elected, five member, Board of Directors serving four-year terms, meets monthly, and governs the District. Funding is derived from property tax dollars, special assessments approved by the voters of the District, plan check fees adopted by District ordinance, community support and the active pursuit of grant funds.

Alpine Fire Protection District employs a Fire Chief, a Division Chief, three Captains, three Engineers, three Firefighters, three Firefighter/Paramedics, one Fire Marshal, one Fire Inspector, one Finance Officer/Admin, and one part-time Clerk/Receptionist. On a daily basis you will find ten people, two Type I Engines, a Type III Engine, a Fire Utility Truck, two Chief Officer vehicles, one Multi-Casualty Trailer, and a Medic Unit (owned and operated by American Medical Response) at the station located at 1364 Tavern Road, Alpine.

The District has a current agreement with the County of San Diego and American Medical Response to provide a 7/24 Advanced Life Service medic unit. M17 is solely owned and operated by American Medical Response.

On April 1, 2001 the Alpine Fire Protection District implemented the Paramedic Assessment Engine program.

In 2002 the District initiated a building program with the purchase of land on Tavern Road and approval of a site plan. The new station was completed in late February, 2006 and the District moved into their new facilities on March 3, 2006. The old station, located on Alpine Blvd, was given back to the community on July 15, 2006 and now belongs to the Alpine Community Center who had originally leased the property to the Fire District in 1957. The station generator, transfer switch and compressor from the Alpine Blvd location were donated to the Campo Volunteer Fire Department on July 14th, 2006.
